Legal Pokémon

A full list of all Pokémon, including limitations and the current banlist, is available here!

What decides whether a given Pokémon is legal or not?

As explained in the introduction, the goal of the Destiny League ruleset, first and foremost, is to make it possible for any viable team to be bred in the 3DS games without cheating. As such, the following rules are in effect universally:

  1. All unbreedable Pokémon are banned.
  2. Pokémon that can only be bred with Ditto are limited to one per team.
  3. Pokémon with 7 male : 1 female gender ratios are limited to 2 per team.
  4. A mixed attacker counts as your limit-one regardless of its species' status.
  5. Any Pokémon deemed too powerful of the remaining set may be banned.

  1. All unbreedable Pokémon are banned.

This includes every legendary Pokémon, as well as the more mundane unbreedables, like Unown.

Ditto is an exception, because Imposter means that only a perfect HP stat matters competitively, and perfect-HP Dittos can be captured easily in any Ditto Friend Safari.

  2. Pokémon that can only be bred with Ditto are limited to one per team.

This includes all genderless and male-only Pokémon that are still breedable.

This is because perfect-IV Dittos are nigh-impossible to legitimately obtain; IV breeding takes much longer without being able to refine both parents' IVs.

Nidoran♂ and Volbeat are exceptions because they can be bred through Nidoran♀ and Illumise respectively.

Species that evolve only if male (Gallade, Mothim, etc.) are exceptions, because they can still be bred via females of their previous forms.

Shedinja is an exception because it comes from Nincada, which can be bred normally.

  3. Pokémon with 7 male : 1 female gender ratios are limited to 2 per team.

This is because it's possible to refine the female breeding partner over time, but it takes significantly longer.

  4. A mixed attacker counts as your limit-one regardless of its species' status.

A "mixed attacker" is defined here as "any Pokémon that uses both physical and special attacks."

This is because breeding 6 perfect IVs is much harder than breeding 5 -- you can usually ignore one of your two attack stats for non-mixed attackers.

U-Turn, Volt Switch, Rapid Spin, Clear Smog, and Dragon Tail don't count; they have important uses outside their attack power.

Fixed-damage moves (Sonic Boom, Dragon Rage, Night Shade, Seismic Toss, etc.) don't count; they're not affected by the attack stats.

Psyshock and Psystrike don't count if the Pokémon is a Special Attacker; they effectively deal physical damage, but they still use the Special Attack stat.

Pokémon that are normally limit-one (male-only or genderless) cannot be mixed attackers. That would be ludicrously hard to breed; 5IV is hard enough.

  5. Any Pokémon deemed too powerful of the remaining set may be banned.

This is because the game is no fun if there are a few Pokémon that are so good that you're forced to either use them yourself or specifically include counters!
